Strange Laws

According to the internet, Fresno has some strange laws that regulate the daily lives of its citizens. Take a moment to compare the sensationalized version of the law as found on the internet to the actual ordinance/section where the law can be found.

• In Fresno – No one may annoy a lizard in a city park.
SECTION 8-410. DISTURBING ANIMALS IN PARKS. No person shall hunt, pursue, annoy, throw stones or missiles at, or molest or disturb in any way, any animal, bird or reptile within the confines of any park. (Orig. Ord. 1076)

• In Fresno – Skipping rocks in a city park is not allowed.
SECTION 8-401. PROHIBITED ACTS IN PARKS. (10) Indulge in riotous, boisterous, threatening, indecent or immoral conduct, or abusive, threatening, profane language or throw stones or missiles. (Orig. Ord. 1076, 3244, and 3356; Am. Ord. 5311, 1958; Am. Ord. 6007, 1961; Am. Ord. 6915, 1966; Am. Ord. 67-138, 1968; Am. Ord. 72-41)

• In Fresno – It is against the law to hold a private bingo game.
SECTION 8-1016. CONDITIONS OF OPERATION. It is unlawful for any bingo game to be operated in violation of any of the following conditions: (b) All bingo games shall be open to the public, not just to members of the nonprofit organization.
The same SECTION makes it illegal to let drunk people play bingo.
(g) No person who is obviously intoxicated shall be allowed to participate in a bingo game.

• In Fresno – Permanent markers may not be sold in the city limits.
SECTION 8-133.2. DISPLAY OF AEROSOL SPRAY PAINT CONTAINERS AND MARKER PENS. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation doing business within the City of Fresno to store, stock, keep or display for sale or transfer any aerosol spray paint container, or any indelible ink marker pen with a tip exceeding four millimeters in width, in an area other than a place that is locked and secure or is otherwise made unavailable to the public and which is accessible only to employees of such businesses. • In Fresno – It is illegal to sell gasoline to a drunken person.
SECTION 8-124. SALE OF GASOLINE TO INTOXICATED PERSON. No person shall sell, loan, give or deliver gasoline to any person under the influence of intoxicating liquor. (Orig. Ord. 2202)

• In Fresno – Elementary schools may not host poker tournaments.
SECTION 8-121. GAMBLING ON OR ABOUT SCHOOL PROPERTY. No person shall play, participate in, or bet for or against any game not mentioned in Section 330 (faro, monte, roulette, lansquenet, rougeet noire, rondo, tan, fan-tan, seven-and-a-half, twenty-one,hokey-pokey, or any banking or percentage game played with cards, dice, or any device,) or 330a (any slot or card machine; any card dice, or any dice having more than six faces or bases each) of the Penal Code of the State of California, in any public place or in any place exposed to the public view located within three hundred feet of any school if said game is played, conducted, dealt, or carried on with cards, dice, or other device, for money, checks, chips, credits, or any other thing which has or represents value. (Added Ord. 72-30, 1972)

• In Fresno – Getting drunk on a playground is against the law.
SECTION 8-120. DRINKING ON STREET OR PLAYGROUND. (a) No person shall drink any beer, wine or other intoxicating beverage on any street, sidewalk, pedestrian mall, alley, highway, playground, parking lot open to the general public or other lot open to the general public.
